Ever wondered if treemen, werewolves, and zombies were real? Well, they might be! There are bizarre medical conditions that mimic these fiction like characters in terms of looks, and behavior. We hate to keep you waiting, so here are 10 of the most unusual and rare medical conditions out there:
1. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, “Stone Man Syndrome”
Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a genetic disorder that progresses over time. It is a medical condition whereby soft tissues like the flesh are turned into bones over time. A particular gene in the bone, muscles, tendons, and ligaments (the ACVR1 gene) is responsible for turning cartilage into bone as we develop from childhood to adulthood (called ossification). When suffering from FOP, this gene undergoes a mutation that allow the gene to allow ossification unchecked throughout a person’s lifetime, even turning skeletal muscles to bones, therefore causing joints to fuse together. That’s horrible!
There is about 1 to 2 million people with “stone man syndrome”, and there is no treatment or cure yet. People with “stone man syndrome” also experience trauma, as they attempt to remove the bone surgically only results in the body producing even more bon in the area.
