What we have today is a mere outcome of the various decisions we have made in the past – trade offs made, and risks taken. We often convince ourselves that there are just gifted people who do great in life and succeed. But the truth is, succeeding is a totality of disciplined habit and calculated decisions (and we may agree to disagree… some degree of luck).
Observing and talking to successful people around you (especially friends of yours will) give you an idea how they deal with life and how they behave from day to day. Here are the ten (10) habits, which most of us wallow in, that successful people never do:
THEY DO NOT SURROUND THEMSELVES WITH NEGATIVE PEOPLE
This does not mean they will not befriend unsuccessful people, or abhor problematic individuals. But, successful people oftentimes try to limit interaction with people who are always complaining, procrastinating, and making excuses. Who wants to be with dim-witted whining morons, anyway? Instead, successful people surround themselves with individuals who inspire them to do greater things. These individuals are positive and proactive people of various fields and background.
THEY DO NOT ENTERTAIN THE NEGATIVE SIDE OF THINGS
Negativity is self-defeating – that’s what successful people think. For them, difficulties are not tragedies, they are challenges, – challenges they are thrilled to hurdle. They look into the past, recollect lessons from previous mistakes, and bravely face new challenges. While calculating risks, successful people do not dwell on “what could go wrong” (but think about what could go wrong, it’s just that they do not dwell on it), instead they focus on what must be done to succeed.
THEY DO NOT DWELL ON FAILURES
Failure is an essential part of learning, and thus of growth. For successful people, failures are opportunities to reboot and do better next time they are confronted with a similar case. This is the reason why successful people are resilient people. They know that when you get knocked down, you have to pick yourself up and fight back, and be better.
THEY DO NOT DWELL IN PROBLEMS
They solve problems, not dwell, or wallow in problems. Dwelling on problems absorb much of your energy, and thus your hope. Then you become hopeless, and you lurk yourself further in the dark room called “Inferno’s Door”. Successful people know that dwelling too much on problems will cause you too much stress. Thus, they focus on steps or actions to mend the current situation, find repose and clarity and open possibilities for solutions. This does not mean that they never feel bad or negative about difficulties, they just move on fast because they know they’ll be most effective when they focus on solutions.
THEY DO NOT CONCERN THEMSELVES WITH HOW OTHER PEOPLE JUDGE THEM
Successful people are not anxious or insecure individuals. They do not measure their worth based on other people’s ratings. They are firm and resolute with their principles, values, and beliefs and do not need other people to validate them.
THEY DO NOT MAKE EXCUSES
Successful people know that effort is not synonymous to success, and that results are the ultimate measure of success. That’s why they get things done. Understanding that outside forces may interrupt in the way they want things done, they take full responsibility of the outcomes of the decisions or actions they choose in situations over which they have no total control. As forward-looking individuals, they look forward to the benefits of getting things done and avoiding pain or mishaps.
THEY DO NOT LIVE IN THE PAST
Crying over spilt milk is no use. Successful people take the past as reference for learning but not a place or memory to dwell at for that moment no longer exists. They practice their freedom and power to proactively design a better future, which can only be done if we set ourselves free from the pain of the past, live in the present, and prepare for the future.
THEY DO NOT FEAR WHAT MATTERS
To fear is human. While most of us have fears, reasonable fears, there is a few kind of fear successful people do not entertain, fear of failures and risks. Yes the future will definitely come to pass, and the future is a scary place, but you have to get through it, and it is up to you how your future will look like. Successful people know that failing is part of the journey, and to try and fail is better than not trying at all. They make sure they do not have regrets or resentment.
THEY NEVER STOP BELIEVING IN THEMSELVES
Successful people know that hope has power. And that hope must emanate from their belief in the self. No one is a bigger fan of you than you are. No one else wants to see you succeed more than you do. And whether you like it or not, it’s in human nature that when things really get bad, no one is going to help you but yourself.
There’s nothing wrong with falling to the ground, and getting up a little dirty or wounded. But the moment you stop believing in yourself, is in fact the moment you start dying. How do you expect other people to believe in you if you do not believe in yourself? How do you think will you convince others if you are not convinced of yourself? After all, it is you who knows what is best for you, so never stop believing in your self. Believe.
